Section 81 Information
Description
This course briefly explores the historical underpinnings and the sources of state and federal power relating to an entitlement that we take for granted: free public education. Additional topics include many issues that are continually in the news and in the courts: church-state conflicts (especially school prayer and school vouchers); desegregation, school financing, student disability accommodations, free speech issues (both students and teachers); and other student rights (including locker searches, dress codes, and due process).
